The PBS documentaryLives Worth Livingexamines the treatment of the disabled in the United States and the struggle for civil rights. After viewing the trailer, click on the "Interactive Timeline" to discover important inroads in that journey. You may be surprised at the number of amputees created by the Civil War or the constitutionality of forced sterilization.

Informed by your viewing, investigate a person who is working to raise awareness of a physical disability. To apply Erving Goffman's terms from the module lecture, this person could be own (someone with the same stigma) or wise (someone who does not have the stigma but knows what it is like for someone to have it). This can include a celebrity (past or present) who has become the face of the disability.

In approximately 100-150 words, write a journal assignment that describes why people with that particular disability are viewed as outsiders. How is the individual that you selected working to change that status and the stigma associated with it? What challenges does he or she face?
