1. Why is it important to study illness experiences, in addition to medical explanations of illness?
Answer
Importance of Studying Illness experience

Disease means, the biological, patho-physiological process while, Illness refers to the experience
of patient. Study of illness is necessary to develop a relationship with the patient so that, his
health care could be ensured. How this relationship can be developed, it may be understood via
consideration of all the dimensions associated with illness. In fact, assessment of a patient‟s
illness experience might be performed with the help of 4 dimensions that are as follows:
Feelings, Ideas, Function and Expectations (you may learn it with the help of reminder.
FIFE for your exam).
1. F = Feelings
Feelings of patient about his illness for instance; his concerns, fears or worries etc. To get an idea
about such feelings is really necessary as; patients could not express their feelings to doctor
which might prove a barrier in their treatment.
2. I reflects Ideas and explanations in context of illness that is, what could be the reason of illness
according to the patient? How he can explain the process going on his body and how he could
define the pain felt via him?
3. F = Functioning
It means what is the impact of illness over the routine/goals/relations of patient?

4. E = Expectations
This considers the patient‟s hopes and expectations from his doctor/treatment procedure and
further about the disease removal.
Thus, after getting all such information, it could be really easy for a health care practioner to
treat a patient physically, mentally as well as spiritually. As, Norman Cousins ha truly said,
“The more serious the illness, the more important it is for you to fight back, mobilizing all your
resources-spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical.”
