What is dark energy?
Dark energy is the name given to the force believed to be making the universe larger and larger. The logic is the universe is getting bigger because of change in gravity and also since distant galaxies appear to be moving away from the universe at very high speed.
This can also be explained as a hypothetical form of energy. This energy exerts a negative pressure against gravity. Because of this negative repulsive energy against gravity, (which is against Newton’s law of gravity) the universe tends to become bigger and hence is going through an accelerated period of expansion.
Although apparent the dark energy makes people think that it is weak, in reality this dark energy is much more powerful. To overcome the powers of gravity as per Einstein equations, we can estimate that dark energy should be atleast 120 orders of magnitude than it seems to be.
Dark energy is one type of pent-up energy inherent in the fabric of space-time. This energy always acts opposite to gravity and hence accounts for the acceleration in the expsnion of the universe. The name dark is given to this energy because it is unexplained and still appears to be a mystery.
Gravity tries to pull things together, while dark energy acts like anti gravity which tugs the things apart on the grander scale.
To test for presence of dark energy, radios telescopes are generally used as tools.
