The entire dynamics of the workplace has changed over the last 50 years. A manager has
to have as much people management skills as domain expertise in today’s environment. People
skill encompasses people motivation and engagement skills. The current generation of
employees is much more motivated by what it doesn’t have rather than by what it has. It is very
important for a manager to understand the difference to keep the employees engaged and hence
at their productive best at the workplace. Jobs have been replaced by roles and money and
compensation continue to be just hygiene factors rather than motivators for the current
generation of employees.
