Introduction Historically, the field of criminology has emphasized the need to explain the occurrence of what has commonly been referred to as traditional “street crime.” Crimes such as homicide, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault have garnered a vast amount of public and media attention, and criminal justice policies have been designed mainly to counteract these personal violent crimes. Whether or not this emphasis relates to the fears that these types of crimes engender or the media’s constant fixation with the “gory details” such crimes produce has been a matter of some debate, what is clear is that the public’s common perception of what constitutes “crimes” as well as who is the common “criminal” has been formed largely in relation to traditional street crimes.
