Gastrointestinal bleeding is a common intestinal problem, from which an individual can suffer. However, it varies greatly within its symptoms and this depends upon the rate, at which bleeding is occurring, if bleeding is occurring at a very high rate than the condition is severe and can even lead to life threating haemorrhage however, if the bleeding rate is slow than it will cause insidious chronic blood loss. Whatever the condition may be one common factor that every case presents is the blood loss. However, it is normally detected by observing stool samples.
Since the blood lost from the gastro intestinal tract will be thrown out of the body through stool only; therefore, stool sample and coloration change in stool are the major parameters that determines gastrointestinal bleeding. When there is acute blood loss from the body it results in lowering of iron and haemoglobin levels within the blood and ultimately patient suffers from dizziness and shortage of breath and this is because haemoglobin is the oxygen carrier and decrease in the concentration of haemoglobin will result in decreased oxygen supply (Laine, 2016).

Melena is a disease that shows symptoms similar to the above-mentioned symptoms, and as supported by Watson and Church (2017), this is due to the fact that melena is a condition more of a symptom that changes the colour of the stool to dark black. Melena is associated with the upper gastrointestinal bleeding; however, it may also originate from small intestine or the right colon.
Colour change of the stool is the reflection that bleeding is occurring from the upper gastrointestinal tract and since, the patient is suffering from dizziness and shortage of breath therefore, and it reflects that the patient has lost a lot of blood in the stool. Common cause of this disease can be peptic ulcers and this is evident form the fact that the patient is only consuming liquid...
