Paul Farmer and Nancy both pursue the question of violence and the way; it is implied with ongoing sufferings in the context of communities. Paul views that the term structure in violence is driven from the ideology of collective social action, which is deemed righteous by a majority of people (Farmer, Nizeye, Stulac & Keshavjee, 2006). The conventional approach is that to gain influence of one race or community, it can only be achieved forcefully and this notion is carried forward from one generation to the other.
For Paul, as he was born in Haiti, he could view the breakout of communal riots between the black and white communities. In spite of the abolition of slavery, the cultural contexts of the slavery are still rooted in the minds of white community, giving it the name of white privilege (Catt, 2020). Thus, for him, violent action of a community is inspired from the traditional thinking of dominating the societal values.
In the same context, Nancy adds some more valuable information to the concept of structural violence by examining the conditions of those who have been deliberately left out from the mainstream society. In fact, Nancy examines structural violence from the perception that there are some routine activities, some sort of forced habits in people that make them develop violent behavior especially in those who suffer from existential crisis in society. They are not left with enough space in society and this makes them adamant to mark their presence with force.
Additionally, the everyday forms of violence emerge when the daily needs of these people are not met well and the same is mentioned in the introduction of the book itself (Farmer et al., 2006).
