Try this experiment and discuss how it relates to acid rain.

You will need a piece of chalk, cup, vinegar

Fill the cup ¼ full with vinegar and add the chalk.

What do you observe?

Why do you think this happens?

1.

Solution:

"Acid rain" is refers to a mixture of wet and dry deposition (deposited material)

from the atmosphere containing higher than normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric
acids. The precursors, or chemical forerunners, of acid rain formation result from
both natural sources, such as volcanoes and decaying vegetation, and man-made
sources, primarily emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)
resulting from fossil fuel combustion. Acid rain occurs when these gases react in
the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic
compounds. The result is a mild solution of sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
Acid rain causes acidification of lakes and streams and contributes to the damage
of trees at high elevations (for example, red spruce trees above 2,000 feet) and
many sensitive forest soils. In addition, acid rain accelerates the decay of building
materials and paints, including irreplaceable buildings, statues, and sculptures
that are part of our nation's cultural heritage.

it can be controlled by taking following measures:
 Understand acid deposition’s causes and effects
 Clean up smokestacks and exhaust pipes
 Use alternative energy sources
 Restore a damaged environment
 Look to the future
 Take action as individuals

Acidity in rain is measured by collecting samples of rain and measuring its pH. To
find the distribution of rain acidity, weather conditions are monitored and rain
samples are collected at sites all over the country. The areas of greatest acidity
(lowest pH values) are located in the Northeastern United States.

No, Most of the countries are facing the problem of acid rain. Yes, Cleveland is
most badly affected area due to acid rain and these results in pollution in lakes,
degradation in historical buildings...
