1.What does the term IMViC means?
Ans. IMViC stands for indole, methyl red, Voges Proskauer and Citrate test. These gr
oups of tests are used to identify Enterobacteriaceae. These are gram negative, rod shaped bacteria which can ferment lactose and grow in the intestinal tract of human beings.
2.Why is the IMViC useful in identifying Enterobacteriacea? Are further biochemical teats necessary for complete indentification?
Ans. IMVic test is useful because it helps to different among different members of the Enterobactereacea family. For complete identification Oxidase, ONPG and Urease test should be performed.
3.What diagnotic test differentiates Proteus and Providencia species from other Enterobacteriaceae?
Ans. Hardy Disk Urea/ PDA tests are useful in differentiating Proteus and Providencia species from other Enterobacteriaceae. These tests are very quick and can be used to detect urease activity and deamination of phenylalanine in Enterobacteriaceae family.
4. How is E. coli distingquished from P. vulgaris on MacCorkey agar? On a TSI slant?
Ans. In Mac Conkey agar E.coli will ferment lactose and hence media will turn pink-red. P.vulgaris cannot ferment lactose and hence media will remain...
