He is Aboriginal but does not know much about his heritage and is having some identity issues. In this case s
tudy, John is struggling to keep up with his life as has had a history of growing up with family violence, due to which for a considerable amount of time, he has spent in foster care. Though he is of native Aboriginal ancestry, however he does not seem to be too aware about his heritage or ancestry. Recently, he quit his foster care and has been struggling as his friends have been encouraging him to indulge in drinking and doing drugs. He is uncertain about his future and seems pessimistic about his life.
It has been observed that children under foster care and without the lack of parental guidance often harbour resentment towards their life and society in general. They feel lack of purpose and meanings in their life, Hence there is no solid driving forces in their lives. As a result, the likelihood is extremely high that they can choose wrong, unethical and illegal means to indulge in instant gratification of life. Furthermore, the Aboriginals in Australia often live in impoverished state and have a very low quality of life and living standards in comparison to Whites, Chinese and other predominant communities in Australia (Hunt, 2013). Hence, John’s case is a double edged sword as he has not only been deprived of a normal childhood but also needs to be ready to face the prejudices that still somewhere exist in Australian society towards Aboriginals. Hence, in light of such issues that John is encountering at this phase of his life, it is imperative that he gets proper care and attention so that he can rebuild his life.
