1 COIT20249 Assessment Details Assessment item 3—Report Due date: 11.55 pm AEST, Friday, Week 10 ASSESSMENT Please Note: Moodle uses AEST time. That is, if you live outside Queensland you will have to adjust the time for final submission (due date and time). Weighting: 40% 3 Length: 2500 words +/- 250 words Objectives Please refer to the Unit Profile to see how this assessment item relates to the Unit Learning Outcomes. This assignment is designed to stimulate critical thinking outside of the classroom by requiring students to write a formal academic report. You will need to follow the ARE process described in chapters 2 and 3 of Your Business Degree 2 (prescribed textbook for COIT20249) to analyse the assessment task, research relevant information and evaluate the information you find. This information should be used to write an academic report in which you present your findings or outcomes and make recommendations for future practice. Professional writing and writing reports are described in chapters 4 and 5 of Your Business Degree 2. This assessment task will assess your skills in critical thinking, researching information, forming an opinion, academic writing, logical ordering of ideas and your ability to support your arguments with quotes from literature. These objectives will be measured by the ‘closeness of fit’ to meeting the assessment task, assessment requirements and marking criteria. Please note that there is a wealth of material available on the Moodle Unit website that you should use to help you through the process of searching for and gathering relevant information, evaluating that information and writing your report. General Assessment Criteria Assessments provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills to achieve the required standard. To do this, assessment responses need to be both clear and easy to understand. If not, the University cannot determine that students have demonstrated their knowledge and skills. Assessments will, therefore, be marked accordingly including the potential for 0 (zero) marks where relevant. The report must focus on the case study scenario given in the Assessment Task section. Any assessment items that do not address the case study scenario may be awarded 0 (zero) marks. If you use Track Changes when writing your report you must ensure that the submitted document is the final and correct version of the document. That is, if your submitted report contains Track Changes or 2 Comments or any other editing marks it may be awarded 0 (zero) marks. It is your responsibility to submit the final and correct version of your report. The length of the report must be within the recommended range. If the report exceeds the maximum word count the marker will stop marking after 2750 words. Moodle auto-submits draft files that are in Moodle at the originally set deadlines. Files that are auto- submitted will not be reverted to draft status except in extenuating circumstances (evidence required). It is your responsibility not to leave draft assessments in Moodle at the due date and time if the files are not ready to be submitted for marking. However, late submissions may attract penalties. Assessment Task Students are required to write an academic report as per the format outlined in chapter 5 of the textbook. The report must follow the CQU APA referencing style. See the American Psychological Association (APA) abridged guide updated Term 2 2018 available from: https://www.cqu.edu.au/student-life/services-and-facilities/referencing/cquniversity-referencing- guides. Please note that the prescribed textbook uses APA referencing guidelines. See also the Referencing Style subsection below. The report is to be based on the following case study scenario about the use of Augmented Reality in Education. Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology which enhances a user’s real-world view/environment by superimposing computer generated content in real time. The computer generated visual object is superimposed/overlayed on the real world object in such a way that it appears as if they co-exist in the same space as the real world environment, in real time. These visual objects can be images, video or animation. Although augmented reality has existed for quite some time, it is an evolving technology and there is huge interest in AR as of past few years. The application of Augmented Reality ranges from the retail, travel and tourism industry, gaming, education, engineering, manufacturing to the medical field, among many others. Business experts believe that usage of AR would attract more customers/users for business, without high operational cost. One of the advantage for business in using augmented reality is that, some of the platform/hardware (i.e., smartphones and tablet) that are used for AR application development are easily available. Using iPhone or Android AR application, users will be able to try on clothes without actually wearing it or to check if the furniture fits the interior before even buying the furniture. However, there are challenges as well, many business leaders are reluctant to change their business models and there is a skill shortage for AR in the industry. Ethics and security issues need to be looked into as well. You are the Chief IT Consultant for a consulting company. One of your clients, XYZ University (XYZU), wants you to advise them on the possibility of using emerging “Augmented Reality” technology in their teaching method. Here are the details of your client: XYZU is a large educational institute with multiple campuses in five different cities (Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, and Sydney) with the main campus in Canberra. It provides undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in all disciplines, with a student cohort consisting of both domestic students and international students from all over the world. XYZU, one of the largest educational institutes in the country, has noticed that their student enrolment number has decreased for the last few terms. So, XYZU is looking into all possible areas of improvement to increase their enrolment numbers. As a part of this strategy, XYZU is thinking of improving their teaching methods by incorporating some cutting edge https://www.cqu.edu.au/student-life/services-and-facilities/referencing/cquniversity-referencing-guides https://www.cqu.edu.au/student-life/services-and-facilities/referencing/cquniversity-referencing-guides 3 technology, instead of traditional teaching methods. Recently, the management team has heard of augmented reality technology and believe that it might improve the student learning experience, but they do not have expertise within the organisation. Management have also heard that usage of augmented reality might also reduce operational costs (for some disciplines) and they think that these savings can be used to improve student services, which will increase their students’ satisfaction ratings. XYZU would like you to investigate the technology involved with augmented reality and the challenges and opportunities of AR. XYZU is also interested to know the infrastructure/hardware/physical setup and training required, and costs involved in incorporating augmented reality in their teaching. You and your team need to gather information about augmented reality, and as the chief IT consultant, your task is also to critically analyse the suitability of augmented reality in teaching for your client. You have to complete this investigation and write a report for XYZU in the next three weeks. Since this is an initial investigation, the report does not require in-depth technical details (the report is aimed for both technical and non-technical stakeholders). Your research and the subsequent report should cover the following tasks: 1. Definition of augmented reality and the up to date developments in the field. This investigation must consider at least four different types of industries (except education) that use/can use augmented reality. You should provide detailed examples for all four cases. 2. Investigate application of augmented reality in education industry. Based on this findings, propose three disciplines (for XYZU) that could incorporate augmented reality in their students’ learning process. Provide details of your proposal explaining how AR will be incorporated in the teaching for the chosen disciplines. As part of this analysis, you might consider any two of the following topics (or you can choose other topics as well): o The potential advantages and disadvantages of the applications, o The infrastructure/hardware requirement, and o costing involved to incorporate augmented reality in their teaching. Please provide your recommendations at the end of the report. 3. Based on the information that you gathered, analyse critically how augmented reality could meet your client’s goal. Your analysis should also include potential advantages/disadvantages, costing, and ethical and/or security issue that your client needs to consider in this case. Please note that you will need to make some assumptions about the organisation in order to write this report. These assumptions should match the information in the case study and not contradict with the objectives of the report. They should be incorporated in the introduction of your report when you describe the organisation and outline the problem to be solved. Relevant assumptions should be incorporated when addressing tasks 2 and 3 above. To avoid loss of marks, do not make assumptions that are not relevant or contradictory, or will not be used in your report discussion. 4 Specifically your report should include the following (word count details are approximate guidelines): 1. Title page: unit code and name, assessment number, report title, assessment due date, word count (actual), student name, student number, CQU email address, campus lecturer/tutor, and unit coordinator. If applicable, add extension request ID and the new due date. Must be formatted to a standard required for a professional/business report. Check week 6 materials for example of a professionally formatted title page. Not included in the word count. 2. Executive summary: should include the purpose of the report, the problem including key issues considered and how they were investigated, your findings, and overview of your recommendations. This part should be approximately three quarters of an A4 page but must not be longer than one (1) A4 page. Not included in the word count. 3. Table of Contents (ToC): should list the report topics using decimal notation. Need to include the main headings and subheadings with corresponding page numbers, using a format that makes the hierarchy of topics clear. Because you are including a ToC the report pages should be numbered in the footer as follows: title page has no page number; and main text to have Arabic numerals commencing at 1. Create the ToC using MS Word’s ToC auto-generator rather than manually typing out the ToC. Introduction
The use of smart devices, empowered by advanced hardware and internet-based connectivity has made the range of sensory information easy to seek and possibility of practical interaction better. The use of augmented reality (AR) is a technological feat that has taken digital sensory experiences integrated with real world environment, making the perspective of the augmented reality users open to better assumptions (McCulloch & Reid, 2014). The educational sector is also offering information-based knowledge to the learners, however, the competition in the market and the inclination towards smart technology is making traditional education system less attractive, therefore in the current report the use and potential offering of AR is discussed in the context of educational organisation and their system of teaching.
1. Concept of Augmented Reality and Its Development
Augmented reality is the technology, the use of which; makes users of the technology, see digitally improvised sensory aspects positioned realistically on real world objects or scenes. As mentioned by Liao (2019), the use of AR takes note of the surrounding environment and often uses three-dimensional mapping to assess the distance, length, width and depth of the field of digital image, audio and hepatic feedback imposition. Therefore, the outcomes prove to be real, giving very accurate idea about the actual implementation sight of real life application of the sensory aspects. Augmented reality excels photo based filters and stereo audio as it can provide consistent projection of virtual objects in video format, making the assumptions of the actual product very accurate, whose virtualised format is projected.
Despite being considered one of the greatest breakthrough of modern science, AR was reached its initial forms in 1960, when Ivan Sutherland developed a prototype augmented reality system, named the ‘The Sword of Damocles’ in 1968, followed by Myron Krueger’s ‘Videoplace’ in 1974. In 1992, Louis Rosenberg developed ‘Virtual fixtures’ and in 1994, Julie Martin developed ‘Dancing in Cyberspace’ (IGreet, 2018). It is worth the mention that the earlier augmented realities were more of virtual reality and the integration with real life scene and atmosphere has been made possible only with newer generation computing and advancement of simulation technology. It is obvious that with the advent of time, the AR technology will only improve as the rate of adaptation of the technology in business is increasing rapidly.
Four Examples of Use of Augmented Reality in Industries
The use of AR has given the ability to try multiple combinations in a given scenario, without even bringing the actual products to the scene; therefore, the following businesses have adapted the use of AR in their business framework.
Firstly, in the fashion industry, the use of AR can be increased. As mentioned by Rehring, Greulich, Bredenfeld and Ahlemann (2019), the fashion industry has ample monetary resources to implement the AR into their business framework. As AR can be installed on smart devices with advanced hardware, any customer can try a number of fashion products such as accessories, jewelleries and cloths without actually putting them on, or visiting the fashion retail stores within a specified timeframe.

(Source: Forbes, 2017)
The customers would only have to stay in the frame of the device, while the products of the fashion company would be superimposed on the body of the customers, giving in a realistic idea about the look of the customer in the selected product (Forbes, 2017). It is seen that although some fashion brands have already started the use of AR in their businesses, the majority if still relying on the traditional business patters, hinting at the potential risk of change rejection from customers.
It is seen that in the decor and furniture industry, AR is highly used by modern business organisations in the sector. The use of AR technology gives the customers as well as the manufacturers the idea about the final look of a product in the context of its background placed around it. As noted by Shabani, Munir and Hassan (2019), every style of furniture and home decor items do not prove to be attractive in all general set ups and only tends to be designed for specific taste of the customers, their budgets and the places, in which they are positioned.

(Source: Forbes, 2017)
The designers also use the AR technology to view their final product and design offerings to the customers in virtual format, saving time, resources and money in the process. As noted by Javornik et al. (2019), as AR offers easy customisation that includes the preferences of the customers, the decor and furniture industry makes products and designs that are lucrative, profiting and accurate.
Thirdly, in the construction industry, AR is used by modern business organisations. In the construction industry, AR is used to view the outlook of the construction after the completion even before doing any work in...
