Assessment Instructions BUMGT5970 Leadership Assessment 3 – Leadership Journey – Reflective Journal and Report This document contains the details for Assessment 3 for BUMGT5970 Leadership. Included are aspects such as:  The assessment overview and report structure;  How the assessment is to be formatted; and  How it will be assessed by using an Assessment Criteria Sheet. You should read this along with the Course Description, which includes information on due dates, submission, etc. If you are not clear on any aspect, please speak with your lecturer who will be happy to answer your questions. Overview of the Assignment You are required to demonstrate your ability to critically reflect on your leadership skills across various settings, comparing and contrasting with theories and materials we have looked at throughout the course. You are required to keep a journal over the course of the semester that outlines how your understanding of the topic of leaders and leadership has been shaped by your participation in the course. Then, you will reflect on these weekly journal entries and write up a 1500 word report that describes your growth, or journey, showing how your reading, participation in class activities and reflection have shaped your view of what leadership is and isn’t. It can incorporate any reflections you may have noted during, or following, a class. You will need to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which reflection is defined and understood academically 2. Describe how the various class activities have shaped your understanding of yourself and others and the effect this is having on your capacity to lead, as well as to follow. 3. You must in some way connect or relate your reflection to the readings assigned throughout the course. You must reference at least 10 academic articles as well as making use of the textbooks on the topic of leadership. These references must be cited correctly. 4. Describe other experiences that you consider relevant to describing how your thoughts, ideas and views of leading and leadership have emerged, or remained constant, for example, any work place experience such as a restructure, change of manager, or significant change that affected your employer, or your employment, or your life circumstances generally. Why is reflection important? Effective leadership is central to leading and managing an organisation at all levels. Reflection is increasingly being recognised as an important tool to “cultivate on-the-job learning conditions” (Seibert 1999, p.201). Reflection is a critical aspect of an authentic learning environment (Herrington, 2012; Herrington, Reeves, & Oliver, 2010; Lombardi, 2007). Introduction
Reflection has been identified as a metacognitive strategy which allows the le
arner whether as an individual or an organization reflects on the experiences, decision and actions. Through reflection, the practitioner attempts to perceive the problem and tries to resolve them. Reflection is a type of learning tool that has an application of experiential learning methods which has been expressed by Dewey. It can also be known as a process of learning which extends to the understanding of the problem and reflecting on them so that a greater understanding of the situation can be achieved. There had been several models based on which reflective practice is based. Each of these models aims to utilize situations, actions and examples so that the actions can be reviewed. Reflections have a higher purpose; it allows in the better capitalization of the learning opportunities through the internalization of experiences and knowledge. In the report, the various aspects that I have learnt related to leadership and leaders will be analyzed through the method of reflection.
Understanding leadership and its impact
While studying the various theories on the perspective leadership, I learnt that perspective leadership theory acknowledges the understanding of the individuals based on the differential comprehension of organizational realities. The leadership paradigm depends on aspects like methods, behaviour, traditional practices and attitudes. As stated by Nielsen, Boye, Holten, Jacobsen & Andersen (2017), effective leadership helps in the identification of inefficiencies in the organization. This includes the introduction of the propositions that will be able to create a structure within the organization helping in the operation and management of functionalities (Chestnut, 2017). The primary objective of any leader within the organization is to meet the objective of the organization. This includes the economic performance of the company. The economic performance in the company is driven by management of the business, management of workers and management of the managers.
While learning the different models of leadership, I learnt there are five main types of leadership model. The authoritarian leadership, participative, transactional, transformational and delegative. In the case of Authoritarian leadership, the leader imposes expectations as well as defines the outcomes. In this kind of leadership, I understood that the advantage is the time spent by the leaders in making any decision. Further, this kind of leadership emphasizes on the chain of commands (Kim, Halpin & Morrison, 2017). The mistakes in this kind of leadership results in a delay in the implementation of the plan. In spite of the consistent results, provided by the authoritarian leadership, many times, this kind of leadership posses challenges in terms of reduction in the collaboration and group synergy.
It can kill the creativity and ability to innovate within the employees. In the case of participative leadership, leadership is based on democratic theory. In my opinion, transactional and transformational leadership are two methods of leadership which are most prominent in most of the organization. In transactional leadership, the leaders involved in creating specific, time-bound and measurable goals which are achievable to employees. In transactional leadership, employees are able to choose the mode of rewards. However, I have realized in transactional leadership, and the disadvantage is the employees are simply followers of the leaders they...
