1. Reflection on Leadership
Advocacy groups, also known as the special groups, are referred to the groups that affect the views and opinions of the general public regarding important issues in the society. These groups
try to point out the varied issues and indirectly addresses the government to amend or improvise their policies in order to resolve the prevailing problem. Along with 4 other members of my college, I had created an advocacy group in order to educate the general public about the ill effects of obesity. In order to manage a group and properly coordinate the activities performed, effective leadership proficiencies are required. I had followed a democratic style of leadership where I gave my team member full autonomy to take independent decisions. In order to create the campaign, regular meetings and discussions were held in which I considered the views and opinions of the members before making important decisions. The main topic of concern was obesity and while leading the campaign (Scanlan & Johnson, 2015),
In accordance to Fuda, there are 7 metaphors that describe leadership during any stage which include fire, snowball, movie, master chef, coach, mask and Russian doll. As per the philosophies of Fuda, fire is the metaphor that can be used for my leadership during the initial stages of the development of the campaign. With the goal of creating healthy society, I had started the campaign along with other members. The spark was there in me in order to change the adverse conditions of the society by educating the people and spreading awareness amongst them regarding the deadly disease named obesity. The ‘burning ambition’ inside me led to the creation of a video in order to provide knowledge to the common masses regarding the harsh truth of unhealthy eating. For us, fire speaks to the powers that start an individual or authoritative change and support it after some time. Traditional change writing proposes that dread is a fundamental and even alluring help. On the other hand, our examination recommends that in spite of the fact that dread may give the underlying sparkle to activity, desire is an undeniably progressively significant inspiration (Avsar, Ham & Tannous, 2017). Manageable change requires the fire of a "burning ambition."
As the team members were effectively managed by me, the campaign was executed in a proper way. We were able to reach out to a wide range of individuals within a short span of time and influence their decision regarding incorporation of healthy heating habits in order to curtail obesity. Most of the aspects of the campaign ranging from quality to quality was maintained, thus making my leadership effective in the progress of the campaign.
I developed my research proficiencies as I conducted an intensive research on the varied aspects relating to obesity which helped to design the activities in a better way. I gathered information regarding the statistics of obesity in the region of Australia through Government reports and public surveys. It was found out that 2 out of 3 adults in Australia suffer from obesity. Obesity is a physical condition where excessive amount of fat is accumulated in the body of the human beings. It results in the formation of deadly diseases like diabetis, cardiovascular diseases, and so on. Obesity restricts the capability of the human beings to actively perform physical activities as fatigue occurs often in the body. The life expectancy rate of the individuals decrease due to obesity and people tend to age quickly. As a leader of the group, I not only managed my team, but also made sure that the interests of the communities are reflected in the actions performed by the group. I had to lead my team in order to conduct the public surveys where close ended questions relating to unhealthy eating and obesity were asked to the general public of Australia. As it was a strenuous task, my team members were not ready to cross that extra mile to collect the data. Being a transformational...
