Making crime policy is not an easy and quick process and it requires lots of mind boggling
thought and consideration of reality. The policy makers should go for thorough analysis of the
crime reality. However, they can use crime perceptions a little bit but relying too much on this can
turn out to be fatal. There are a number of problems associated with formulating a crime policy
based on crime perceptions. Perceptions are not always right and they can be either way. They can
be either right or wrong and one cannot afford to take chances while formulating crime policies.
Your wrong perception will certainly have negative social implications. For example, if your
perception says that there is too much crime in a particular area and police starts patrolling and
harassing people. The people will not tend to support this and they will not have any trust in police.
Crime policy based on perception leads to reactionary policies that focus on dealing the day to day
