Section 2:

Background: Oil spills are neither necessarily accidental nor dramatic. The majority of oil in the ocean has little to do with the media-reported off-shore accidents and a lot to do with some unnoticed, everyday occurrences.

More than 54% of the oil in the ocean comes from land based sources such as storm water run-off, leaks from storage facilities and industrial processes.

At least 40% of all land-based oil pollution may result from motorists' changing their own oil and disposing of it improperly. Used motor oil should be taken to a service station, where they will dispose of it properly.

Marine sources, including tanker operations contribute 18%. Tanker accidents contributed 11%.

Answer to Question 2
Oil spill is considered as a release of petroleum hydrocarbon liquid oil in environment due to
human activity or mismanagement. Hydrocarbon oil contains too many carcinogenic compounds
which inhibit growth of aquatic and plant life as well. Spread of oil over the surface also cuts
oxygen supply to the aquatic life which will inhibit their growth and some of them may die also.
Liquid petroleum hydrocarbons can kill almost all aquatic species and wildlife in an area in
which oil content is comparatively high due to huge release of oil. In polluted ocean water
aquatic life cannot survive hence it will affect industries which are based on aquatic life and also...
