1. What differences do you see in the temperature patterns displayed by these two maps?
ANSWER: The temperatures in the North Pole and Upper northern hemi
sphere are cooler in January and hotter in the Southern and south
pole. In July the northern hemisphere is much warmer along with the north pole are, while the southern hemisphere and south pole are much
colder.
2. Why do these differences in the temperature patterns between these maps exist? What impact does season (winter or summer) have on
isotherm spacing?
ANSWER: The temperature differences exist because of the spacing from the sun and the rotation of the earth and in the summer the sun is
closer to the northern hemisphere while in the winter the sun is closer to the South Pole.
3. What sort of spatial temperature pattern does closely spaced isotherms show compared to widely spaced isotherms?
ANSWER: Closely spaced isotherms indicate a steep temperature gradient and widely spaced lines indicate a weak temperature gradient.
What differences do you see in the sunlight patterns displayed by these two maps?
ANSWER: From the angle that the sun rays are hitting the Earth the map on the left is getting far more sunlight hours per day in the the
winter months than they are in the summer months in the southern portion of the globe. While in the summer the sun seems to be around far
longer in the northern portion of the globe. It also appears that the sun may be stronger in the southern hemisphere during the winter time as
well.
