Management of BPSD should centre on both the patient and the caregiver, and measures to improve patient's quality of life and reduce their caregivers' stress are essential. Reducing BPSD with the treatment of comorbid somatic conditions (Tible et al, 2017). Successful treatment of BPSD often involves a combination of measures, one of which is the administration of pain medication. A large majority of guidelines and suggestions from experts emphasise the use of non-pharmacological therapies initially.
Be attentive, articulate your thoughts back, and reassure the sufferer. Dementia patients are highly attuned to nonverbal signals and tend to mimic the emotional expressions of people around them, so maintaining a soothing demeanour is helpful. The causes of BPSD should be identified and mitigated (Bessey & Walaszek, 2019). If possible, have just one person evaluate the patient at a time, and have that person do other tasks as well. Dementia patients may benefit from both calming activities and restful spaces outside of the busy hospital setting.
