Draft proposal (here is a completed copy of the draft proposal that I submitted) The negative Effects of Daylight-Saving Time Introduction Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a practice of advancing one’s clock during the winter season to maximize the light and move the darkness to a later time. Over the years, it is a practice that has become more popular as many countries worldwide have implemented this system. DST may indeed give people another hour of Daylight in the evening, during which they may be able to do more exercise, but with that also comes the negative effect it is known to have on the human body. Whether Alberta should switch to a single time zone has become a prevalent debate as research has shown that Daylight saving time does have detrimental health effects on individuals. According to scientists, forcing people to transition has consequences such as increased energy consumption, traffic accidents and cardiovascular events and affecting our circadian clock. The change of time disrupts our body’s normal clock cycle, affecting our metabolism, blood pressure, and general mental activity. Recent studies, however, challenge the idea that Daylight does increase traffic accidents and energy consumption. According to Buckle, “Studies have found that DST contributes to improved road safety by reducing pedestrian fatalities by 13% during dawn and dusk hours”. Over the past couple of years, considerable research has been conducted on DST’s positive impact on energy consumption. According to Aries & Newsham (2008), “Simple estimates suggest a reduction in national electricity use of around 0.5%, as a result of residential lighting reduction” (p. 3). Argument Due to multiple scholarly-based research that has challenged the positive impact DST has on individuals, it is also very important to look at the negative impact to determine if Alberta should switch to a single time zone. In my first argument, I am going to argue the negative impact it has on our health. Research conducted on 55,000 subjects by the department of chronobiology at the University of Groningen shows DST’s negative impact on our human circadian system. Additionally, the author emphasizes the importance of not switching time zones as it disrupts our seasonal biology (Kantermann et al., 2007). Another research conducted by Dr. Julie Carrier, a professor of psychology at the Universite de Montreal, observes the negative impact the time jump has on our body’s normal clock cycle and how it affects our metabolism, blood pressure, and general mental activity (Cooks, 2020). In my second argument, I will argue its impact on energy usage among residents in Alberta. Research conducted by Blake Shaffer at the University of Calgary proves that not only does DST
