1. Suppose you are going to conduct a LCA project that compares plastic (PE) bags with paper bags. Please write down the functional unit you can use, and also the associated reference flows for two products for comparison. (5 points) 2. Please identify which processes are elementary flows and which are intermediate flows. (5 points) Iron ore, at blasé furnace Corn grain, in ethanol plant Coal, in ground CO2 from methane flare River water, at plant inlet Calculation (35 points) 1. How much electricity (in kWh) a power generation plant generated in a full day? If the CO2 emission of the plant is 10 tonne per day, what is the CO2 emission to produce 1 kWh of electricity? (10 points) · The capacity of the plant is 100 MW. 2. The global warming potential is calculated by converting all GHG emissions to CO2, i.e., kg CO2 eq. and then adding all emissions together. Within 100 year potential, converting factors (GWP) is 1, 25 and 300 for CO2, CH4 and N2O. For producing a product if the emission of CO2 is 20 kg, the CH4 emission is 0.5 kg, and the N2O emission is 0.01 kg, What is the total global warming potential (GWP) of the product? (10 points) 3. There are two individual processes A and B with inputs and outputs, shown in the figure below. Please combine two processes into one process in order to protect details of the individual processes. You need to show the inputs and outputs of the combined process. (15 points)

1. Suppose you are going to conduct a LCA project that compares plastic (PE) bags with paper bags. Please write down the functional unit you can use, and the associated reference flows for two products for comparison. (5 points)
Biodegradable or Non-Biodegradable:  Paper bags are biodegradable as they are made up of paper or a cardboard while plastic bags are non- biodegradable as they are made up of plastic.
Decomposition: Paper bags usually take 2-3 months to decompose while plastic bags requires more than 100 years for its decomposition.
Renewability: Paper bags are renewable in nature while plastic bags are non-renewable.
2. Please identify which processes are elementary flows and which are intermediate flows. (5 points)
