Streeter-Phelps Model – DO sag curve

A factory discharges 0.015 m3/s of treated effluent into a river whose minimum rate of flow is 0.24 m3/s. The depth and width of the river are 1.1 and 8 m, respectively. Temperature of the effluent is 35oC, while that of the river is 28oC. The BOD5 of the effluent is 10 mg/l and that of the river is 2.7 mg/l. The effluent contains DO of 5.1 mg/l. DO of the river at upstream of the discharge point is 2.3 mg/l. At 20oC, kL is estimated to be 0.23 day-1. kR should be calculated from the river’s depth and width. Temperature correction coefficient (q) of 1.047 for kL and 1.024 for kR.

1.1) Draw DO-Sag curve of this phenomenon.

1.2) Show the calculation steps.

1.3) Discuss what happen with the curve you calculated.

Ans 1 Solution for Streeter-Phelps Model – DO sag curve
DO sag curve is plotted with the two concu
rrent processes of oxygen consumption and oxygen replenishment. It shows the variation in dissolve oxygen concentration of a river due to the addition of any effluent or discharge. Here, in the given question factory effluent is discharged into the flowing river. Now using the given conditions all the calculations required for drawing the curve and the designed DO sag curve is shown as below:
Given:
Rate of discharge of effluent into a river = 0.015 m3/s = Qw
Rate of flow of river = 0.24 m3/s =...
