1. Ecological Role of Fungi:
A Big Picture concept in Mycology
Since Mycology is that branch of Science which deals with the study of fungi hence; it
usually involves all the concepts related with fungi from minor to major. For instance, (i)
classification of fungi involving their structural, genetical, biochemical, and functional
characteristics, and (ii) their applications either for economical purposes or for treatment of
diseases. Out of above conceptions, I would like to discuss here the crucial roles played by fungi
in preservation of an ecosystem.
In fact, fungi can be defined as; chief constituents of global biodiversity which regulate
the rates of various key procedures of an ecosystem for example, these are renowned for their
role as decomposers because of their extensive range of extracellular enzymes that are able to
catalyze the disintegration of various complex substances into their simpler forms which can
further be absorbed by fungi or through other creatures. The importance of above steps can be
understood via the fact that without these, cycling of carbon and other nutrients would not be
possible (Green et al., 2004).
In addition to their vital roles in biogeochemical cycling, fungi may also be termed as;
major components of food- web since; fungal mycelia can serve as the prime resource of carbon
in numerous soil food webs, and fungal fruiting bodies might be considered important food-
sources for large vertebrates involving humans (Woodcock et al., 2006).
Besides, fungi might also be called the most common and significant plant pathogens that...
