1. Select. Find a recent news article (published within past three months, it could be
anywhere in the world) about a macroeconomic topic that you find interesting.
Suggested online news sources are BNN, CBC, National Post, Globe and Mail or
magazines such as The Economist or Maclean’s. Include a copy of the full article in your
homework.
2. Summarize. Write a short (4-6) bullet-list summary identifying the key points of the
article.
3. Identify. List the macroeconomics concept(s) that the article addresses.
4. Analyze. Use theory to support your explanation of what is happening, why and what
you predict will happen next. Use the textbook to assist you in your
explanations/predictions. Write and/or illustrate with appropriate graphs and economic
analysis the key points in the article, if applicable. Graphs can be drawn using your
computer or hand drawn and inserted as images.
5. Explain personal connection. Explain why this article is of interest to you (e.g., you are
personally affected or you know some who is, it relates to your career goals, etc.).
6. Link to Economic Way of Thinking. Explain how this article relates to one of the topics
covered in the “Economic Way of Thinking” in Chapter 1 (scarcity, trade offs, rational
choices, marginal cost/benefit, incentives).
7. Attach & reference. Include a full copy of the article that you are analyzing as an
appendix, or else provide a link to the article/report. If you read other news articles to
help you understand the issue make sure to list them in the reference section. It is
assumed that you are using your textbook for each assignment.
REMINDER: This analysis is your original creative thought, critical thinking and analysis.
Formatting:
To make it easy to read use headings, bold/underline and bullets/paragraphs as appropriate.
Font: Use a plain font (e.g. Arial or other easily readable font), size 12, single spacing.
