Introduction
This paper talks about emotional labor and its consequences at the work place. It is also called as emotion work. Every organization needs to create an emotional work atmosphere and it is also the need of the job. In this, the staffs of the company are expected to display some sort of emotions towards their customers, clients, or others.
Doctors, service providers like hotels and transportation service providers, and others need to have emotional labor towards their clients. In other words, it is more applicable towards the service based industries.
This term is quite important and has been used widely across the world. It is meant to help the industry to improve the quality of services that is rendered to the clients and others. In this paper the importance of the term and how it helps in improving the services and meet the expectation of the clients.
1. Concept of Emotional labor
Emotional expressions are greatly controlled and managed at the workplace through many formal and informal methods. Despite of this some of the emotions are expressed openly, while others are suppressed by the individuals in an organization.
At the workplace the staffs are expected to control their emotions and not reveal it at the worst situation. In such a case, it results into suppression of their general or genuine expressions and emotions, which is called as ‘Emotion labor.’ It has a functional and in some cases dysfunctional impact on the productivity of the company.
Also, it affects the personality and ability to express their feelings of the staffs.
Thus, the management has to work effective ways through which the issues or the concerns of the emotional needs of the clients are discussed and communicated with the concerned staffs in details. Emotional competence is a term that is used for focusing on understanding how different people deal with their emotions.
It is equally important to apprehend how they react to others emotion, especially at the work place. As per many researchers emotional competence is considered to be an essential personal resource that improves the quality of the services rendered by the individuals. This resource actually balances the characteristics of the work, any sort of emotional dissonance, and also the outcome of the variables.
The following points were considered while researching on the work culture and emotional stress–
· There is a direct relationship between the work characteristics and also between the emotional dissonance
· The variables of the emotional stress is also considered at this time
· There exists a relationship between the work characteristics and also the outcome of the variables
It was also stated that the expressions and other feelings is a part of the paid role, as it is an integral part of the human nature.
This it is necessary to necessitate it properly, especially at the work place where emotions cannot be expressed quite freely or openly. In some cases fake expressions and behavior can actually impact the individuality of the staff, which will then affect the performance or productivity at the work place.
The emotional labor has different impact at the workplace and has to be used in the best possible manner. For example, a customer service representative might have to suppress his anger, while handling an irate customer whose demand is quite unnatural.
Every staff has to face lots of emotional variations at the work place and all of them are quite important. Problem arises when the staff chooses not to follow the rules and do something that they are comfortable with.
