1. Pour some dry sand into a tin can that has a cover. Compare the temperature of the sand before and after vigorously shaking the can for more than a minute. Explain your observations.
2. Place a small rubber ball on top of a basketball, and then drop them together. How high does the smaller ball bounce? Can you reconcile this with energy conservation? (What if the basketball was not elastic?) These one-step calculations are to familiarize you with the equations of the chapter.
