Singapore Port Management (Porter’s 5 Forces)
Porter’s five forces provide an analysis of how competitive an industry is. The supplier power in Singapore port management is considered as high. This has enhanced the level of competition in the industry. The suppliers mainly; the service providers, have a strong control over the Singapore port. They threaten to cancel their services that enhance their strength and capability over the industry. The Buyer power is also high in the industry because of many customers in the port industry. Singapore port has generated business agreements and realignments with their customers which they content to (Guha, 2011).
In addition, the level of new entrants in the industry is considered high. Reason being, a price war arising from the towage services provided by Kotug has resulted in the decline in prices by about 25% making it easier for new companies to enter the industry. The threat of new substitutes is also considered high because of the constant movement of goods to and from the port, which are mostly fruit commodities. Rivalry on the other hand, is also considered intense in Singapore. The port industry in Singapore has experienced an increased rivalry between Port Klang and TanJung Pelepas. However, Singapore can avoid rivalry by ensuring that there is a balance in ports’ capacity in the Singapore region. An excess capacity results to an aggressive market share competition (Guha, 2011).
