 1. Liberty ship failures Read the detail of the following case study about the failure of liberty ship. The failure of many of the World War II Liberty ships is a well-known and dramatic example of the brittle fracture of steel that was thought to be ductile. Some of the early ships experienced structural damage when cracks developed in their decks and hulls. Three of them catastrophically split in half when cracks formed, grew to critical lengths, and then rapidly propagated completely around the ships’ girths. The figure below shows one of the ships that fractured the day after it was launched.

a) What was the main material the ship was made of?

b) What do we need to do to identify the cause of failure?

c) Explain the cause of failure.

d) What remedial measures can be taken to correct the problems?

2. List four types of advanced materials and, discuss their distinctive features. Briefly define smart materials/system and give example. What type of materials do you think will be the materials of tomorrow? Discuss.

3. Show that the atomic packing factor for Body-Centered Cubic (BCC) crystal structure is 0.68.

4. Compute the theoretical density of Aluminium which has an atomic radius of 0.143 nm and an FCC crystalline structure. Compare this density with its measured density (from the literature).

5. What are elastic and plastic deformations? How do they occur? What is their difference? Explain from atomic structure point of view.

Please note: Students will be expected to research topics. The use pictures is encouraged.
