are both legal to buy and use under certain conditions. Why is it that
less life threatening drugs, like Marijuana are still illegal under
Federal Law (Although more than 30 states have legalized Marijuana use
in some forms.)?

1) The use of drugs was very common from ancient times be it for intoxication, fun or for curing certain chronic diseases or for making medicine
s. If we see American history that we can see the wide acceptance of alcohol in the society from the times of colonisation. So later on from the 19th century onwards use of drugs like opium, marijuana and cocaine became very popular. These drugs became famous because of their therapeutic uses. It was seen that opium dissolved in alcohol was giving relief to people from fever, cough, insomnia, headache, piles, inflammation of the bladder, cholera morbus, and diarrhea. Similarly, cocaine was also popular because it cured diseases like asthma, depression, tooth pain, sexual impotency etc. So in the 19th century these drugs formed the major constituents in the medicine industry and various companies patented the same for their use and rights.
2) The use of tobacco and alcohol was also very prevalent in the American society and its structure. They have always been a source of intoxication and certain taboos among the lifestyle of the people since the colonisation era. Though certain statutory regulations are being put up by the government for their restricted use in the society. If we take the case of marijuana, though it is less life threatening but still marijuana to remain illegal under federal law, as it is classified under the provisions of schedule 1 substance, under the Controlled Substances Act.
