1) The use of drugs was very common from ancient times be it for intoxication, fun or for curing certain chronic diseases or for making medicines. If we see American history that we can see the wide acceptance of alcohol in the society from the times of colonisation. So later on from the 19th century onwards use of drugs like opium, marijuana and cocaine became very popular. These drugs became famous because of their therapeutic uses. It was seen that opium dissolved in alcohol was giving relief to people from fever, cough, insomnia, headache, piles, inflammation of the bladder, cholera morbus, and diarrhea. Similarly, cocaine was also popular because it cured diseases like asthma, depression, tooth pain, sexual impotency etc. So in the 19th century these drugs formed the major constituents in the medicine industry and various companies patented the same for their use and rights.
