1. Diverse Learning Need for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) & Hearing Impairment in Children
Details of ASD, AD/HD & Hearing Impairment
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to group of developmental disabilities, which can affect the cognitive as well as physical abilities of an individual. As mentioned by Kasari et al. (2016), it would be essential to understand that ASD affects the ability to understand, visualise or even hear and respond; thus, making it difficult for the sufferers to maintain communication, relationships and normal behaviours. ASD can lead to qualitative impairment concerning social interaction, impairment in communication as well as repetitive and restrictive stereotypical patterns of behaviour and activities (Smith, Jann, Dapretto & Wang, 2018).
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) is considered as one of the most vastly researched disorders. Gibbs (2018) mentioned that AD/HD needs to be considered as neurobiological condition; thus, leading to inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity among individuals. Further, no direct cause of AD/HD have been identified rather, it has been proposed that changes or abnormalities in chemical messengers of the brain could lead to the development of this disease (Darmawijaya, Bangun & Pramita, 2019).
Deafness refers to complete inability to hear any sound. There can be numerous reasons that could lead to deafness such as nerve damage or injury, hearing loss over time, deafness due to disease or other medical complication (Hall, MacMichael, Turner & Mills, 2017). Deafness or complete hearing loss makes it difficult for the individual to decipher or communicate with others.
The Ways ASD, AD/HD & Hearing Impairment Challenge Child and Its Family
Parents might face difficulty in understanding the child during initial stages along with difficulty in explaining change to their child. Lersilp (2016) mentioned and argued that dealing with students suffering from ASD could be a major challenge for staff members. However, certain strategies can facilitate their interactions; thus, making the implication of special need learning easier for children.
AD/HD students might face difficulty while decoding or recognising words along with the inability to focus upon learning the actual meaning of word while pronouncing it. Students with AD/HD might also face difficulty in writing such as editing, spelling, planning, self-monitoring and much more. Similarly, it becomes difficult for parents to socialise their child because their behaviour is different from a normal child of the same age group. ADHD can leave the parents feeling stressed, disrespected and frustrated or disappointed (Gibbs, Carrington & Mercer, 2020).
Learning issues lead to reduced academic achievements because student cannot respond to anything, which the teacher might be saying or to audio. Deaf children face difficulty in keeping pace with other students in the school; therefore, they require special schools where teachers teach with sign language only.
Empowering Staff Members on Strategies and Adjustments Needed for Making Mainstream Classroom an Inclusive Environment for All Children
Individualised Programme Plans (IPPs) would be one of the most effective strategies for children with ASD. Instruction methodology and materials are needed in order to make them compatible to IPP. Likewise, program specialist teachers can also facilitate the determination of strengths and area of needs for the student; thus, making it easier for classroom teacher to plan for IPP.
Individualised learning for students suffering with ADHD could be incorporated with their hobbies or area of interest; however, it would depend upon the teacher; how effectively they can plan IPP for the child. Likewise, teacher assistants can provide academic as well as behavioural support through reinforcement of proper skills and behaviours (Heshmati, Hatami, Ebneahmadi & Chegini,...
