Policing Models
The police force has worked through turbulent times to ensure peace and order in societies. For this purpose various models of policing were developed. Amongst these the most prominent ones have been the broken windows policing, problem oriented policing and community policing. Broken windows policing first came into picture in 1982 in an article by Wilson and Kelling (1982). The model advocated that disorder (or broken windows) is conducive towards the rise of more serious crimes due to decreased levels of social control. It concentrated on controlling minor crimes in order to create a more conformed society (or social control) which would then lead to control of bigger crimes.
Problem oriented policing was developed in 1979 by Herman Goldstein as an analytical method in order to create strategies that can help prevent and reduce crime. This model directs the police to analyse the current community problems and develop solutions modelled for that particular community (National Institute of Justice).
