1. Describe the altered blood flow in the presence of an atrial septal defect. Include the direction of flow and the type and amount of blood present in each circulation.
2. Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) results when the ductus arteriosus, a vessel between the aorta and the pulmonary artery that is present during fetal development, fails to close after birth. Using your knowledge of normal anatomy, draw a sketch of the defect and describe the abnormal pattern of blood flow, including the rationale for it. Would a heart murmur be present?
