1. Socrates advocates use of necessary lies in the initial education of children
Socrates had given two account of education. In his second account of education he advocates use of necessary lies in the early education of children. The second account of education is the philosopher-king education, which advocates good. Socrates believe that knowledge of good is the ultimate virtue. He advocates that knowledge of good is an absolute, which should not be influence by opinions. Early education feed false tales to children so that they can absorb the material and make the correct opinions.
False tales protect the children from the truth, which is not good. Socrates believe that false tales about God and heroes help in making the good character of the guardians to trained them into noble puppies. Socrates suggests that lies help in controlling the warrior guardians in terrorising the citizens. He believes that providing information absolute information to the children, which consists of both good and bad examples, they are unable to process between good and bad (Badiou, 2013, p.56). They tend to choose bad examples from the story told to them. They will be unable to identify what not to do.
Thus, feeding noble lies to the children will protect and strengthen them. This helps them to make better choices in future. I believed that Socrates advocacy towards feeding noble lies to the children in early education was correct. This indeed helps protecting the children from ugly truth and save them to pick up bad examples. I believe after attaining certain level of maturity only children can able to differentiate between good and bad, truth or false.
2. Plato’s agreement on description of the Guardians
Plato would not agree on description narrated about the guardians. Some scholars written that guardians were considered as group of elite dictators who holds absolute power in the society to save the community. some part of the statement was indeed true. According to Plato, Socrates proposes the model of ideal town, in which guardian are the set of specialised military guard divided into two group (Badiou, 2013, p.77). One who rules the city called guardian and other are auxiliaries.
The guardians are group of people, which include both men and women with the responsibility to protect the republic from internal and external threat. They were highly educated military,...
