Describing the differences between an Aboriginal concept of Social and Emotional Wellbeing as opposed to the term Mental Health
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people utilise the term social and emotional wellbeing to define the wellbeing of individuals. In general, the term "Social and Emotional Wellbeing", as defined by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, refers to the spiritual, cultural, social, as well as, psychological wellbeing of the individuals. This term does not only refer to the mental health or illness of a person, but recognises the fact that the connection of the individuals to their culture, family, spirituality, land, as well as, community is of crucial importance to individuals and can have a significant amount of influence on the wellbeing of the people (healthinfonet.ecu.edu.au). In addition, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people also recognise the fact that the social and emotional wellbeing of individuals can be impacted by the occurrence of past events, as well as, policies.
The term "Mental Health", on the other hand, is used by the western people when defining the wellbeing of individuals. Instead of catering to a holistic perspective to understand how well a person is doing, the term mental health is used in terms of describing the manner in which individuals carry out their thought processes and how they feel along with their coping mechanisms to keep on going with their feelings and thoughts while taking a proactive part in their regular lives. The absence of any type of mental illness is the sole indicator of defining a person who is mentally healthy. In other words, when individuals are facing trouble in their minds which adversely influences their thought processes, feelings, as well as, demeanour, they are not considered to be mentally healthy and these mental illnesses define the wellbeing of the individuals.
There are other key differences among the terms "Mental Illness" and "Social and Emotional Wellbeing" in the perspectives of the Aboriginal and Strait Islander people. The Aboriginal and Strait Islander people believe the term "Mental health" and "Mental Illness" to be emphasized too much on the mental issues which may disrupt one's well being. From the perspectives of the Aboriginal and Strait Islander people, mental health does not appropriately focus on the entirety of the elements which make up and impact on the wellbeing of individuals. The term "Social and Emotional Wellbeing", on the other hand, is much preferable by the populous as it has way better suitability in terms of having a holistic view of one's emotional and social health. In this context, it can be said that the Aboriginal and Strait Islander people consider mental illness and mental health to be a portion of the social and emotional wellbeing of individuals, but not the whole of it as mental health refers only to the troubles that are present in one's mind (Freeman et al. 2016).
Therefore, it could be concluded that the term "social and emotional wellbeing" has a holistic view of health and enables individuals to describe all of the elements which influence and make up for the wellbeing of individuals whereas mental health enables individuals to only describe the mental issues individuals...
