1. “Yes, but . . .” See how many problems you can list that might arise when trying to
develop a curriculum along the lines of a theme or curriculum unit rather than
according to subject areas. It may be useful to make two lists: one for preschool and one for primary grades. Then, discuss ways in which these problems might be solved.
2. If you are reading this book as part of a course, stage a formal debate in which one side argues the case for linear, subject-based curriculum in the primary grades and the other argues for linking the curriculum through the use of units and themes.
